Lenten Penance

Days of Abstinence  -  This refers to abstinence from meat and binds all who are age 14 years and older.

Days of Fast  On these days we limit ourselves to one full meal.  We may take two partial meals This obligation binds all between the ages of 18 to 59 years.

What is the Obligation?  Ash Wednesday and Good Friday are days of fast and abstinence.  All the Fridays of Lent are days of abstinence from meat.

How Serious is the Obligation?  The obligation to penance is a serious one.  In particular, we have a grave obligation to fast and abstain on Ash Wednesday and Good Friday.  There is also a serious obligation to abstain on the Fridays of Lent.  To excuse oneself entirely from responsibility would require a serious reason.  However, to excuse oneself on a particular Friday, a proportionate reason would suffice (i.e., a special celebration, anniversary, etc.)
