Good Shepherd Sunday
Fourth Sunday of Easter
May 07th, 2017

My Dear Friends in Christ,

Today is Good Shepherd Sunday because each year on the Fourth Sunday of Easter we hear a Gospel passage reflecting on Jesus as the Good Shepherd who protects and cares for the people of God just as a shepherd tends his sheep. After his Resurrection from the dead Jesus entrusted care of his sheep (The Church) to his chosen shepherds (The Apostles), and then down through the centuries to the bishops and priests in union with the Pope.

Today is also World Day of Prayer for Vocations, giving us the opportunity to pray that God inspire more men and women to discern God’s call in their lives and grant them the courage to serve Christ and His Church as priests, deacons, and consecrated religious. We are a Eucharistic Church and if we wish it to continue to be so, we need more men who are willing to offer their lives to serve Christ and his Church as shepherds, as his holy priests.

Today the Church throughout the world prays for vocations. Will you make a special effort to ask the Lord for more vocations to the priesthood and religious life? Here are some ways you can pray for and encourage vocations:

Pray for the priests who have ministered to you throughout your life, both living and dead.
Keep your parish priests in your prayers throughout the week.
Pray a rosary for more young men and women in our diocese to respond generously to God’s call.

As important as praying for vocations is, I also invite you to promote vocations by inviting people to consider a vocation in the Church. Talk about vocations with your family and encourage your children, grandchildren, or other young people to consider a vocation as a priest or religious brother or sister. If you see someone whom you believe has the qualities of a good priest, deacon, or religious brother or sister, why not tell them? God is always calling but He needs our help in making His voice heard. We’re all talent scouts for God!

Finally, if you yourself have been considering a vocation to the priesthood or religious life, I say don’t be afraid! I encourage you to come forward and speak with me so we can discuss the next step in the discernment of your vocation.

In Christ,
