Solemnity of the Most Holy Trinity Sunday
June 11th, 2017

My Dear Friends in Christ,

Today we celebrate the Solemnity of the Most Holy Trinity. Of the world's monotheistic religions, only Christianity believes in the Trinity. It is unique to us. As the Catechism states: “The mystery of the Most Holy Trinity is the central mystery of Christian faith and life. It is the mystery of God in himself. It is therefore the source of all the other mysteries of faith, the light that enlightens them. It is the most fundamental and essential teaching in the ‘hierarchy of the truths of faith’” (CCC 234).

The mystery of the Holy Trinity, One God in three persons, may be the central mystery of our Catholic faith, but is also perhaps the most difficult for us to wrap our heads around! How can God be both one and three? How can the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit be fully God, and yet distinct persons? Our minds cannot grasp this completely.

And yet, that very fact makes the doctrine of the Trinity ring true. It shows that no merely human mind would have been able to come up with it. And it also shows that God, the Creator of the universe, exists in a way that we, mere creatures, cannot fully understand - and that makes perfect sense: God should exceed our ability to understand him; if he didn't, he wouldn't be much of a God.

This mysterious and wonderful doctrine about God, that he is both unity and trinity, is as the Catechism says, “the mystery of God in himself.”  Think about that for a moment. We, as Christians, have been given a privilege that no one else in the history of the world has been given: we are able to know God from the inside. Through Christ's grace, we have actually begun to know God as he knows himself. That is how much God has loved us!

As we profess our faith in this Triune God who has loved us so deeply, let's thank him for this truly incredible gift and let's promise him that we will no longer take it for granted. Every time we pray in the name of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit, we renew our commitment to live lives worthy of this divine friendship, the divine adoption that we have received.

In Christ,
