From the Desk of Father Mac

Twenty-Second Sunday of Ordinary Time
September 03rd, 2017

My Dear Friends in Christ,

"Whoever wishes to come after me must deny himself, take up his cross, and follow me” (Matt 16:24). With those dramatic words in today’s Gospel, Jesus challenges all believers to authentic discipleship and total commitment to him through self-denial and acceptance of the cross of suffering, even to the sacrifice of life itself. While every Christian is called to imitate Jesus’ self-giving, in a special way, those called to religious vocations are called to imitate Our Lord through a life of sacrifice, pouring out their lives daily in service of Christ and his Church.

We’ve all heard that there is a crisis in religious vocations, but there are signs of hope. In our increasingly secularist, materialist, and individualist culture, more men and women are choosing to be “counter-cultural” and are pursuing religious vocations as priests, deacons, and consecrated religious women and men.

Here is some of the Good News of Vocations in the Archdiocese of Los Angeles in 2017:

This summer Juan Diego House, the college house of priestly formation for the Archdiocese of Los Angeles, was renamed Queen of Angels Center for Priestly Formation. The college house of formation, currently located in Gardena, will move to a new complex on the campus of Bishop Montgomery H.S. in Torrance next summer.
7 new Priests were ordained on June 3, 2017
9 new Transitional Deacons were ordained on August 12, 2017 (To be ordained as Priests on June 2, 2018)
21 new Seminarians entered this Fall
10 new men at St. John’s Seminary
10 new men at Queen of Angels
1 new man at Seminario Hispano in Mexico City
Plus 3 men who graduated in May from JDH and entered 1st Theology at St. John’s Seminary
96 Total Seminarians for the Archdiocese of Los Angeles! Good news indeed!

While this news is certainly encouraging, the fact remains that the number of people in formation is inadequate to keep up with the pace of deaths and retirements among priests and religious. We must continue to pray for an increase in vocations; that more young people will have the courage to accept Jesus’ invitation to take up the cross and follow him. But we have to do more than just pray. We must also encourage vocations among young people. Talk to your children about religious vocations. If you encounter someone who you think has the qualities of a good priest, deacon, or consecrated religious, tell them! Invite them to consider a religious vocation. We’re all called to be talent scouts for God!

May we all do our part to foster a Culture of Vocations at Saint Cyril of Jerusalem Church!

In Christ,

Pastor
