From the Desk of Father Mac
Sunday of Ordinary Time
My Dear Friends in Christ,
On September 27, 2017, Pope
Francis launched a two-year global campaign to support immigrants
and refugees around the world called “Share the Journey.”
In conjunction with the annual celebration of Respect Life Month
in the month of October, the bishops in the U.S. are asking
Catholics around the country to help kick off this campaign by
taking part in a week of prayer and action on behalf of immigrants
and refugees in the U.S. and around the world from October 7-13,
Immigration remains a difficult issue in our country
and it is made even more difficult by the polarization of our
politics. There is no denying the hard truth that comprehensive
reform of our broken immigration system is sorely needed. The basic
outlines of immigration reform as proposed by the U.S. Catholic
Bishops are easy to understand:
• Security: We need to
secure our borders and establish an orderly and fair system of
verifying who can enter our country and how long they can stay. We
also need a non-invasive way to keep track of people once they enter
• Visa reform: The best border “wall” we
could build is a well-functioning visa system. We need a system that
enables us to welcome workers with the skills we need to meet the
realities of the global economy.
• The undocumented:
There is broad public support for granting the 11 million
undocumented persons living among us a generous path to regularizing
their status and even citizenship — provided they meet certain
requirements, such as learning English, paying some fines and
holding a job that pays taxes.
During this week of prayer and
action we can join Pope Francis and the Church around the world, and
share the journey with fellow children of God by:
about their journeys. Read stories, watch videos, and pay attention
to news that can help sensitize us to their reality.
the #sharejourney campaign on social media! Meeting
immigrants and refugees.
• Contact your local Catholic Charities
agency to learn how you can join or support their programs that
serve immigrants and refugees.
• Saying a daily prayer for all
people, and especially children, who have fled their homes in search
of peace and safety.
• Supporting the work of local and
international Catholic agencies, like Catholic Charities and
Catholic Relief Services, who help to care for the needs of
immigrants and refugees in the United States and around the world.
