World Mission Sunday
Twenty-Ninth Sunday of Ordinary Time
October 22nd, 2017

My Dear Friends in Christ,

Today is World Mission Sunday. This year’s theme is Mission at the Heart of the Christian Faith, which reminds us that our mission begins on the day of our baptism to go forth and proclaim the Gospel to all. It’s this proclamation that unites us all in our commitment to continue the work of Jesus Christ and World Mission Sunday provides an opportunity for re-commitment.

The focus of World Mission Sunday is driven by the Holy Father’s message emphasizing that mission is at the heart of the Christian Faith. In particular, he says:

“The world vitally needs the Gospel of Jesus Christ. Through the Church, Christ continues his mission as the Good Samaritan, caring for the bleeding wounds of humanity, and as Good Shepherd, constantly seeking out those who wander along winding paths that lead nowhere.”

Our prayers, support and commitment will impact young mission dioceses in Africa, Asia, the Pacific Islands, and part of Latin America and Europe where missionary priests, religious and lay leaders share the faith and serve those most in need.

Recently, a visiting missionary priest opened his homily by asking people to raise their hands if they were a missionary. Only three hands went up — and that included the missionary himself. He went on to explain how, by virtue of our Baptism, we are all called to be missionaries, and then asked the question again. This time, all hands went up. Seeing the congregation with their hands held high in affirmation was a powerful symbol. What would it look like on this World Mission Sunday if all hands, here at Saint Cyril’s and in all the churches throughout the world, were raised high, unified in their commitment to continue the work of Jesus Christ? What a powerful image that would be! Today, I invite and encourage you to get to the heart of your faith and join with the worldwide Church in raising your hands in a resounding ‘Yes” to the question: Are you a missionary?

You can demonstrate your commitment to participate in the mission of the Church by making a gift to our second collection at the end of Mass today to support the Society for the Propagation of the Faith, a Pontifical Mission Society. Your generous financial gift will help sustain clinics caring for the sick and dying, orphanages providing a place of safety and nourishment, shelters for victims of human trafficking, schools educating children from kindergarten through high school, as well as the support to provide for seminarians preparing for priesthood, and religious Sisters and Brothers in formation programs.

I encourage you to visit missionsla.org where you will find mission stories of help made possible by your prayers and support.

In Christ,

Pastor
