Feast of the Ascension
May 13th, 2018

My Dear Friends in Christ,

Today we celebrate the Feast of the Ascension of the Lord. In today’s Gospel, before ascending into Heaven, Jesus gives his disciples (and us) a command: Go into the whole world and proclaim the gospel to every creature. It is the Holy Spirit who enables us to follow this command.  We are Christ’s disciples, and he has shown us the way. Let us follow him with joy and thanksgiving!

Today is also Mother’s Day, an opportunity for us to express our gratitude and appreciation for the love and care given to us by our mothers, grandmothers, aunts, and other beloved women in our lives.

Some women are called to exercise their motherhood in a unique way: as a foster parent. May is Foster Care Awareness Month! There are currently 34,000 children in foster care in Los Angeles County, the highest number in the nation. 21% of foster children in LA are under the age of 2. And upon aging out of foster care without a family, 1/3 of youth will become homeless, 1/5 will become incarcerated, and 70% of trafficked youth come from the foster care system. Every child deserves a loving family. We are adopted sons and daughters of God, and we know that the family is the basic building block of society. These kids need the love of a family to support them and nurture them to their full potential.

At Masses this Sunday, a representative from an organization called FosterAll will speak to us about foster parenting. FosterAll acts as a bridge for prospective families, connecting you to foster agencies that best fit your family. Is your family called to be a foster family to children in need? Come and find out more! FosterAll will present a seminar on foster parenting in the parish hall on Thurs. May 24 at 7PM. Learn more about what it takes, find real answers, and hear from other foster/adoptive families about their experiences.

If your family does not feel called to be a foster family, you can support foster youth in other ways:

· Bring meals and material needs to families who foster

· Mentor foster kids through Big Brothers, Big Sisters or KidSave

· Drive foster kids to church with Covenant for Kids

· Host a holiday brunch for kids in group homes

· Host drives for duffel bags or clothes for foster youth

· Become a CASA (Court Appointed Special Advocate) for a child

The Archdiocese of Los Angeles has set up a special webpage with resources for foster parenting. Visit archla.org/foster to learn the numerous ways you can help change a child's life!

May God abundantly bless all of our mothers, grandmothers, and other beloved women in our lives. Happy Mother’s Day

In Christ,

Pastor
