NINETEENTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME
August 12, 2018

My Dear Friends in Christ,

Today we continue our reading of the “Bread of Life Discourse” from chapter 6 of John’s Gospel. In today’s passage Jesus says: “I am the living bread that came down from heaven; whoever eats this bread will live forever; and the bread that I will give is my flesh for the life of the world.” (John 6:51).

Jesus reminds us, as he reminded the people of his time, that we need to rely for strength and nourishment on food that food that will feed our souls and bring us eternal life. For us Catholics, this means celebrating and partaking of the Eucharist, the sacrament which forms and transforms us to live in this world and the next.

The Eucharist demands more than the opening of our hands to take and our mouths to consume—the Eucharist demands that we open our hearts and spirits, as well, so that we may become what we receive; to become another Christ. To receive the Eucharist worthily we must not only consume the sacrament but allow ourselves to be consumed by the sacrament. In the profound simplicity of the bread and wine of the Eucharist, we are called to become the Christ we receive. God has blessed us abundantly, and so we are called to share from our abundance, giving of our time, talent, and treasure to build up the Kingdom of God on earth. We are then called to become the bread of life for others, especially those most in need.

Here at Saint Cyril’s this weekend, we have two wonderful opportunities to be the bread of life for others. First, you can make a gift to this weekend’s second collection for the Missionary Cooperative Plan. Each year, the Archdiocese of Los Angeles invites missionaries to come and share with us the work of the Gospel being accomplished in the Missions. The money collected goes specifically to each diocese or religious community making the appeal in the parish. This weekend, we are pleased to welcome Fr. Jude Umeobi who will preach at all Masses about the missionary work being done in the Diocese of Awka, Nigeria. Your generous gift to the Missionary Cooperative Plan will go to support the important work being done to spread the Gospel among our African brothers and sisters in Nigeria. Special yellow envelopes for this collection are in the pew racks.

The second opportunity to be the bread of life for others this weekend is to give blood. The Red Cross will be in the Msgr. Navin Parish Hall from 8AM to 2PM on Sunday to accept blood donations. There is a critical shortage of blood during these summer months so your gift is crucial. If you did not make an appointment to donate blood, they will accept walk-ins.

Nourished and strengthened by the Eucharist we receive, let us seek to be the Bread of Life for others!

In Christ,

Pastor
